Your schedule is full. Your voting options should be clear.
Whether you’re balancing work, classes, caregiving, or everyday responsibilities, voting by mail gives you the option to complete your ballot at home. But there’s more to it than putting an envelope in the mailbox.
At Black Ohio Leaders for Democracy (BOLD), we want you to have the information you need—from requesting your ballot to making sure it arrives on time.
First, do you need a reason to vote by mail?
No. Any registered Ohio voter with up-to-date registration information can vote absentee without giving a reason. You do not have to be traveling or away from home.
You do, however, need to request your ballot. Ohio does not automatically send every voter one. Receiving an application is different from receiving your actual ballot.
Know these two deadlines
For the November 3, 2026 general election, keep these dates somewhere you’ll see them:
What you need to do
Submit your absentee ballot application
Deadline: Your county board of elections must receive it by October 27 at 8:30 p.m.
Return your completed ballot
Deadline: For regular domestic absentee voters, your county board must receive it by November 3 at 7:30 p.m.
A postmark alone does not meet the ballot-return deadline. Your completed ballot must arrive on time. Military and overseas voters have separate rules. These deadlines are also explained in BOLD’s Ohio Voter Checklist.
Think of October 27 as the last deadline—not the best day to start. Your application needs time to reach the board, and your ballot needs time to reach you and get back.
Start with your ballot request
Visit BOLD’s Get Ready to Vote page and look for “Vote by Mail.” The “Request a ballot” link connects you with Ohio’s official application resource.
Complete the official application, print and sign it, and return it to your county board of elections by mail or in person. Filling out information online does not replace returning the signed application.
Give your ballot—and its envelope—your attention
When your ballot arrives, take a few minutes to read the instructions before marking your choices.
Follow the directions for the identification envelope, provide the required identification information, sign where indicated, and seal everything as instructed. If you’re mailing it back, use sufficient postage.
The envelope is part of the process, so give it the same attention you give your ballot.
Still researching your choices? The voter guide linked on BOLD’s Get Ready to Vote page can help you explore your ballot and learn about candidates before you make your selections.
Return it early. Then check its status.
Once your ballot is complete, avoid letting it sit with the rest of your mail.
You can return your own ballot directly to your county board of elections. If time is running short, contact the board about returning it before the deadline.
After returning it, use Ohio’s absentee ballot tracker to check its status. If something looks wrong or your ballot hasn’t arrived, contact your county board promptly.
Your next step can be simple
You don’t need to figure everything out at once. Start with the step in front of you: request your ballot, complete it, return it, or check its status.
